Commonwealth Day 2020

Monday 9 March, was Commonwealth Day 2020.

The day was marked in Royal Tunbridge Wells by the Mayor, Cllr James Scholes, who was joined by children and their teachers from 10 local primary schools and Deputy Lieutenant of Kent, Georgie Warner. The guests heard the Mayor read a letter from the Commonwealth Secretary-General and then read the Commonwealth Affirmation. This is an event that takes place across the Commonwealth and after the affirmation the Commonwealth Flag is raised.

In Tunbridge Wells as the flag is raised on the Town Hall roof the children unfurl another flag on the Town Hall steps.

Following the ceremony the children joined the Mayor and Mayoress in the council chamber for refreshments and to learn a little more about the role of the Mayor.

Children from the following schools attended the ceremony:

  • Beechwood School
  • Bidborough School
  • Bishop Down Primary School
  • Broadwater Primary School
  • Claremont Primary School
  • Holmewood House
  • Kent College Pembury
